California Self Generation Incentive Program

  • The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved a new incentive for energy storage when associated with on-site fuel cells or wind turbine.

  • The VRB-ESS qualifies for the $2 per Watt ($2 million per megawatt) rebate.

    • Advanced Energy Storage systems are technologies that convert electricity into another form of stored energy and then convert back to electricity at another time.
    • Beginning in 2009, AES systems are eligible for SGIP incentives and must be coupled with an eligible self generation technology, currently fuel cells and wind turbines, and be able to discharge at rated capacity for a four hour period.
    • In addition, the system must be able to load follow and be warranted for at least 5 years.
    •  Note that Advanced Energy Storage systems utilizing hydrogen as the storage medium are not eligible at this time.
  • Retrofitting base loaded fuel cells allows the on-site host to peak shave and avoid nuisance trips, resulting in savings of 20% or more on their energy bill.  Payback is less than 3 years.

  • Contact us to determine if a retrofit to your current fuel cell or if future installations will make sense.
